The health of your back influences all aspects of your life,
from posture, to work, play and even sleep. An unhealthy back is a
painful burden that on one should have to carry. Close to 80% of us
will experience back pain during our lives. Yoga techniques are
effective in alleviating pain by working through many different back
issues. Yoga also helps maintain a healthy back. A twelve week study
published by the Annal of Internal Medicine "Comparing Yoga Exercise,
and Self Care Book for Chronic Lower Back Pain" found yoga was more
effective than self care book for improving function and reducing
chronic low back pain; and the benefits persisted for at least several
months. In this workshop you will learn the yoga postures and
applications used in this effective program. We will explore other
common back issues such as week lower back, swayback (lordosis),
rounded upper back (kyphosis), whiplash and disc issues. We will learn
how to use yoga therapeutics based on Kripalu Yoga and Integrative Yoga
Therapy to work with these issues and to improve back health.
This workshop includes:
- Understanding your back
- Anatomy and understanding common back issues
- Postural assessment and awareness techniques for
proper body alignment
- Yoga Therapeutics for various back issues - approaching
each yoga practice with back safety as the primary focus
- Using Mula Bandha and Uddhyana Bandha for core strengthening to support the lower back
- Lengthening the spine, stretching tight muscles, strengthening muscles that have become weak
