Deva Parnell, founder and director of Discovery Yoga, has had a long relationship with Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, one of the largest and most respected yoga centers in the world. She has been teaching Kripalu Yoga for over 40 years and training yoga teachers since 1987.

Deva became interested in yoga in the early 1970s. By the end of the decade, she had become a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher and was teaching evening classes while working as a graphic designer and raising her teenage daughter.

In the mid-1980s, Deva moved to Lenox, Massachusetts and joined the residential staff at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, the largest residential yoga center in the country, where she lived and worked for twelve years.
While at Kripalu, she became a senior program director, curriculum developer and teacher-trainer. She was instrumental in the development of Kripalu Yoga and Kripalu Yoga Teacher Training, and trained over 2000 yoga teachers. She was also director of staff yoga education, and in 1994 was awarded the Kripalu International Network's Global Service Award.

After moving to Saint Augustine, Florida in 1999, Deva brought the Spirit of Kripalu to the First Coast through classes, workshops and yoga teacher training programs at several locations on Vilano Beach, South Ponte Vedra Beach, and Saint Augustine before opening a small studio on King Street in the historic district. Her 200-hour Discovery Yoga Teacher Training program was the first in Florida to be registered with the national Yoga Alliance, and within a year she had outgrown the little studio and began looking for a facility to provide both studio space and housing for out-of-town students.

Deva found what she was looking for in a dilapidated old boarding-house/warehouse building just West of the "old city", and began renovations on what would become Discovery Yoga Center & Hostel, where she created sacred space and hired a highly skilled staff, held classes and workshops, and offered both 200- and 300-hour teacher training programs before selling the property after 17 years, in December, 2019.

The rest is history. Discovery Yoga Studio moved to a rented space, hosted by 8 Limbs Yoga in Saint Augustine for two and a half months before closing our doors due to COVID-19.

Now in her 70s Deva says, "Life might knock me down, but I always get back on my feet. My staff and I will continue to offer the best classes and training programs possible in a whole new way."

No longer limited to one studio location, Discovery Yoga teachers continue to offer classes educational programs at local studios and world-wide. We are planning our next 10-month weekend program at the Hamption Inn on Vilano Beach, and  are looking at destinations like Costa Rica and the Caribbean for workshops, training programs and retreats.

We now have Discovery Yoga affiliates in Saint Augustine and Palm Coast, and are looking for more qualified teachers and studios to offer our time-tested, Discovery Yoga Teacher Training programs around the world.
