The
National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that more than 44 million
people are at risk for, or have, osteoporosis and low bone mass. These
conditions affect people of both genders, all ethnic backgrounds, ages,
body types and lifestyles. Research is somewhat mixed as to exactly
what type of exercise is best, but it generally is accepted that
exercise and movement help build and maintain bone. However, certain
movements such as forward and side bends as well as twists may put some
people at risk for injury. Therefore, movement guidelines are important
for skeletal health and safety.
