ANDROS
ISLAND
As the
fifth largest land mass in the Caribbean (most of it unexplored)
and home of the third longest reef system in the world, Andros offers
a remarkable natural environment and an astonishing variety of eco-systems.
To the north, soft tropical sands sweep back into sweet smelling
pine forests. In the center of the island, thick low-lying bush
opens into inland waterways and tidal flats. Along the eastern shore,
coral rock splits open into underground rivers, while the western
shoreline eases out into the Great Bahama Bank. Everywhere, mangrove
marshlands feed a pristine reef.
Andros is very old
and build of coral limestone, layer upon layer. Most of the island
lies underwater. Dive deep enough along Andros' walls and you will
find ancient beaches, ghostly white remnants of the last ice age.
Underwater caves are filled with stalactites and stalagmites, attesting
to the time when water barely dripped from the ceilings. Taino Indians
(The Lukka-Kairi or Lucayans), who were here long before Columbus,
buried their dead in some of these caves.
Put on your walking
shoes or hop on a bike and cruise through sleepy villages down to
deserted beaches, up into inland blue holes for swimming. Find trails
for birding or search out wild orchids. The small village of Fresh
Creek is a short 20-minute ride, or you can visit the Androsia Batik
Factory.
SMALL
HOPE BAY LODGE
Our retreat environment is an informal holiday resort that focuses
around the central lodge build of coral rock and Andros pine. Comfortable
couches and throw-pillows create a friendly, home-like atmosphere.
The Lodge houses a dining area, bar/lounge, game room and reading
room. There is also a small boutique on the premises. There are
no phones (one phone/fax for guest use in the office), no newspapers,
no TVs, no keys. Emphasis is on a natural environment with relaxing,
low-impact lifestyle. There is no dress code -- bare feet, tee-shirts,
sarongs, anything (except neckties) is acceptable.

ROOMS
Twenty cottages, handbuilt of coral rock and Andros Pine, are located
directly on the beach, shaded by pines and hugged by the ocean.
Each has overhead ceiling fans and locally made furniture decorated
in Androsia Batik fabrics, and all with a view of the sea. Each
has fully tiled toilet/shower facilities, hot and cold running water
and lots of towels. King-size beds and single beds are available.
There are four two-bedroom cottages for families, as well as a special
"honeymoon cottage". Cribs and extra cots for children are available
at no extra charge.
FOOD
Breakfast is full American-style (eggs, bacon, hot cakes, fruit,
etc.); lunch consists of a hot dish (curried chicken, smuddered
grouper, meatloaf...) plus full salad and sandwich bar, and dessert
bar. Dinner features salad bar, dessert bar, plus choice of meat
or fish entree (or a bit of both), served with fresh island vegetables.
If you are a vegetarian, you'll enjoy the salad bar, fresh cooked
vegetables and rice. Small Hope Bay Lodge invites you to consult
with their staff to help them meet your requirements.
WEATHER
The northern Bahamas remains quite temperate year-round. Most of
the days are like perfect spring and summer days. Winter weather
sometimes can bring a "blow" from the North which can make for choppy
seas. Daytime temperatures can drop to the low 70s.
CHILDREN
Children are welcome visitors and will love the water sports, informality
and spaciousness of this retreat. There is a game room and a separate
dining hour for the 12-and-under crowd. During the evening parents
can relax while children enjoy their own night-time dining and play
under complimentary care of evening babysitters.
DIVING
& SNORKELING
Small Hope has three dive boats, two instructors and four divemasters
on staff. For beginners, the Lodge offers complimentary introductory
lessons, as well as PADI Certification. Boats go out twice a day,
every day, and visit three sites. Depths range from 15-foot shallow
reef dives to 50-foot coral gardens, to 90+-foot wall & cavern dives.
You can also experience wreck dives, blue-hole dives, and even a
shark observation experience. Rates are $45 for a one-tank dive,
$55 for a two-tank dive and $50 for a night dive. Specially priced
all-inclusive dive packages, custom-tailored specialty dives and
snorkeling trips are also available. You can even snorkel with wild
dolphins!

Andros Island is world famous for its superb bonefishing, reef fishing
and deep sea fishing. Half-day and full-day trips are available
