More women than any time in history are now approaching or are in the
midst of the menopausal years. Conventional medical wisdom
often treats menopause as a disease. The Eastern traditions view
menopause as a time of greater wisdom and deeper insight—a natural life
transition to be celebrated and embraced. Yoga can be a wonderful
system to help manage the symptoms of menopause. Because of the
hormonal fluctuations during menopause, women can feel out of balance
and truly victims of their changing bodies.
A regular yoga practice can help with specific symptoms of menopause
and our attitude towards it. Yoga postures level out the physiological
instability by relaxing and gently stretching every muscle in the body,
promoting better blood circulation. Every asana has a
multitude of effects on all the systems of the body. Pranayama
and meditation help facilitate a spiritual alignment inspiring women to
accept and nourish this change of life. Yoga’s approach to health
during menopause and beyond is based on the premise that the body
should be allowed to function as efficiently, effectively and naturally
as possible.
